Caring for silver
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver. It tarnishes when it reacts with sulphur in the air, so a little care goes a long way.
Everyday care
- Put jewellery on after perfume, hairspray and lotion.
- Take it off for swimming, cleaning and exercise.
- Store each piece in its own pouch or a lined box, ideally with an anti-tarnish strip.
Cleaning
- Wipe with a soft silver-polishing cloth, following the grain.
- For heavier tarnish, wash in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, rinse and dry thoroughly.
- Avoid toothpaste and baking-soda pastes — they scratch.
Pieces set with pearls, opals or other soft stones should only be wiped, never soaked.
